This is a true story of a good man who is a natural-born leader, fueling his existence with (self-deception), coupled with quitting never being an option.
As a “wild card”, thrown into the deck always seeking another rush for adrenaline and to avoid school yard bullies, I knew I had to learn to defend myself and be the best at it. At a young age, I convinced my mom to enroll me into a Karate school.
After years of rigorous training and competing in over 150 competitions, I set my sights on the ultimate-point Karate bare-knuckle competition.
This type of competition was widely known to be the most brutal and challenging of all, testing the true effectiveness of each competitor's skill.
Drawing on my exceptional technique, speed and non-quitting spirit for 12 consecutive years, I retired as a 5th degree Black Belt in 3 disciplines. Karate - Jujitsu - Aikido.
I broke and fractured bones I couldn’t even name, not at the jungle gym or the monkey bars, but “my martial arts playground." Each painful mishap was a broken bone seeking another adrenaline rush. It was the final bone crushing break on Long Island, NY in 1997. After smashing through 1000lbs of solid block ice, I attempted to go for the record of kicking through 4 Louisville Slugger Baseball Bats. I cracked the bats and snapped my leg in half, all while holding my composure for my students as I sat waiting for help to arrive.
It seems ones sense of personal worth takes shape in childhood, usually beginning with our parents influences, the sense of being valued as a child was one of them.
I grew up in the construction industry with an extensive track record of change. From the 70s to the 21st century, I am a walking testimony of this: Change comes from pain. Pain is the root of all art, I believe. Growing up I always had a feeling of urgency in my life.
I grew up in the United States around my family owned business and farmland spread across the mountains of PA. Pop was a master builder and worked in the City of Allentown and beyond.
Being curious and mischievous I would sneak out and climb out in the seat of trucks and heavy equipment. It was my young man's dream while trying not to get caught as I would play with the controls as if they were life sized Tonka Toys. I was blessed to inherit the hand of my grandfathers trades and flourish in life.
